The coral triangle is the worlds largest and richest area of coral diversity and marine life. Covering parts of of Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste, the coral triangle has an area of 6 million km2. What makes it so rich is that it holds 76% of the worlds coral species, and in comparison the Caribbean is only home to about 8%. Among the 76%, 574 different species of coral are found at Birds Head Peninsula in Indonesia. It is also home to 2,228 different species of fish, and 6 out of 7 sea turtle species. From southeast Indonesia to central Philippines is where there is the highest concentration of different species of reef fish.
The coral triangle is a huge area for nursery grounds and juvenile growth to species such as tuna. Over fishing has been a big problem in this area and effecting the surrounding population of marine life and people greatly. About 120 million people rely on the resources directly from the coral triangle. many different changes such as over fishing, tourism, urbanization and destructive fishing is putting the center for great marine biodiversity under threat. Many different organizations such as WWF are working together to protect this area of thriving ecosystems. The WWF’s work regarding the coral triangle is trying to manage fishing, monitor activities such as trade, and creating more sustainable tourism and aquaculture.
A multilateral partnership was set in place between the Coral Triangle nations. In 2009 the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs and Fisheries and Food Security were established to ensure plans of action regarding these issues. 1.4 Billion dollars was raised by this partnership to fund the Coral Triangle. WWF is dedicated to help conserve and sustain economies around this area and helping Coral Triangle governments protect such a sacred area.
This area of such abundant biodiversity needs to be protected. Having this many different species of marine life is crucial for keeping everything balanced. All the surrounding area and different organizations need to work extremely hard to protect all these species for endangerment. To keep this area thriving is one of the most important things week can do. Global warming and climate change are having effects on all ecosystems, but the things we can control such as over fishing need to be in place.
